Tick Flicks – A “Not-So-Seasonal” Series: Episode 3: Still Feeling That Lyme-Light?

This case-based session dives into Borrelia burgdorferi — the pathogen behind Lyme disease in dogs — covering what you need to know to screen for, diagnose, manage, and prevent this common tick-borne infection. We’ll explore current guidelines, the latest research, practical diagnostic options, and real-world approaches across the spectrum of options.

You’ll leave with the tools, confidence, and evidence-based resources to guide contextualized testing, treatment, prevention, and pet owner communication — while addressing One Health considerations. 

Learning Objectives:

  • Apply evidence- and expert-based guidelines for Borrelia burgdorferi (Lyme) clinical management, screening, and preventive care in dogs 
  • Recall updated information on Lyme disease risk in both endemic and emerging areas 
  • Use available resources and communication tools to support patient care and client education across the spectrum of care 

Speakers

Holly Brown, DVM, PhD, DACVP

Dr. Holly Brown received her DVM from the University of Georgia and worked in private practice before returning to UGA for a residency and PhD in clinical pathology. Dr. Brown remained on as a faculty member where she served as a diagnostic clinical pathologist, instructor, and collaborative researcher.

Dr. Brown then joined VCA Metzger Animal Hospital’s general, referral, and emergency practice in State College, PA as an on-staff clinical pathologist. There she sees a wide variety of diagnostic submissions and enjoys playing an important role at the interface of diagnostic testing and patient care and providing continuing education on maximizing laboratory diagnostics.

Dr. Brown has always been passionate about and actively involved in delivery continuing education around maximizing laboratory testing, and she recently transitioned into her new role as Chief Veterinary Educator for Antech Diagnostics

Michelle Evason, BSc, DVM, DACVIM, MRCVS

Michelle Evason, BSc, DVM, DACVIM (SAIM), MRCVS serves as Global Director, Veterinary Clinical Education for Antech Diagnostics (MARS). She has worked in general practice, academia, specialty clinical practice, and in the animal health industry. Michelle has published on numerous infectious diseases, antimicrobial stewardship, nutrition, spectrum of care, veterinary- and pet-owner education related topics. She keeps busy (and humble!) with two teenage daughters, one husband, multiple 4-legged creatures, and numerous imperfect projects in various stages of completion on her farm in PEI, Canada.
