Bio

Richard is 1981 graduate of Tuskegee University where he completed his DVM degree, along with two other bachelor degrees. After an internship and instructorship in pathology at Tuskegee University, he attended Texas A&M University where he completed a three year residence in anatomic pathology. He returned to Tuskegee University where he served as an assistant professor of pathology for three years. In 1989 he moved to California working as a diagnostic anatomic pathologist in multiple veterinary diagnostic laboratories, and started his own biopsy and full body necropsy service. He joined ANTECH as an anatomic pathologist in 1998. Richard taught clinical pathology and parasitology in the Mt. San Antonio University veterinary technology program from 2003 - 2005. In 2005, ANTECH partnered with Western University School of Veterinary Medicine to help train rotating veterinary students in pathology and necropsy. Richard has served as the director of the Western University/ANTECH Student Extern and Pathology Training program since its inception. Richard’s primary area of expertise is small animal full body necropsy pathology. He is the full body necropsy pathologist at ANTECH Fountain Valley. He published a small animal necropsy book in 2009 (“Color Atlas of Small Animal Necropsy”). He resides in Eastvale, CA, with his wife Cynthia and his son Miles where they enjoy the many delights of southern California living.

Scott Moroff

Bio

Scott earned his veterinary degree from the University of Pennsylvania, graduating in 1983. He completed his pathology residency at the Animal Medical Center, was a recipient of the C.L. Davis Veterinary Pathology Award in 1986 and successfully passed board certification in 1988. Scott is a member of the ACVP where he has served on the Lymphoma and Margin Evaluation Ad-Hoc Committees, as well as a member of the ASVCP where he has served on the Quality Control/Quality Assurance Committee. He has twice been the recipient of the Daniels Award from the Society of Comparative Endocrinology, and is proficient in both cytopathology and surgical pathology. He has published a variety of articles on molecular and immunodiagnostic methods, and tumor classification and grading. Scott joined ANTECH in 1997, and has filled many leadership roles throughout his tenure, most currently as VP and Chief Scientific Officer. When not at work, you can find Scott outside riding motorcycles, bicycling, hiking, snowshoeing, building something with wood or inside reading, cooking and enjoying a good cab or brew.

Carl Myers

Bio

Carl received his veterinary degree in 2008 from The Ohio State University. He began his residency training in anatomic pathology at Kansas State University in the same year, and earned his board certification in 2012. He worked at Abaxis AVRL for two years before joining ANTECH Diagnostics in 2015. His areas of interests include oncologic pathology, endoscopic biopsies, and large animal and equine pathology.

Carl works in the Mississauga Ontario laboratory. He enjoys hiking, cooking, and exotic cuisine.

Fabiano Oliveira

Bio

Fabiano received his DVM from the Federal University of Santa Maria (UFSM), Brazil, in 2002. He then remained at UFSM to complete a Master’s program in veterinary pathology. In 2005, Fabiano moved to U.S. for his residency training in anatomic pathology at Texas A&M University and earned board certification in 2009. He worked as an anatomic pathologist for five years at the Texas A&M Veterinary Medical Diagnostic Laboratory (TVMDL) before joining the Antech team in their regional Texas office in College Station. He has authored and co-authored several studies on diagnostic pathology. His areas of interests include oncology, dermatopathology, and infectious diseases.

Fabiano and his wife live in College Station (TX) with their two sons and two cats.

Valarie Pallatto

Bio

Valarie is a native of Pennsylvania, graduating from Indiana University of PA with a B.S. in Mathematics Education and as a Distinguished Military Graduate from ROTC. She began her professional career as an Army Officer serving in logistics and human resources management positions at Ft Bragg, NC. During her service supporting the United Nations Operations in Somalia, she made the decision to pursue a career in Veterinary Medicine. Valarie completed her DVM at North Carolina State University in 2000, graduating Summa Cum Laude. She completed an internship in the Northern Virginia area and was an emergency veterinarian for a year before entering her residency training in clinical pathology at North Carolina State University. She successfully completed board certification in 2006. Valarie is a member of the AVMA, ASVCP, and ACVP where she has served on the Credentialing Committee. She is an adjunct Associate Professor at North Carolina State University, and remains an active participant in the residency program. Her areas of particular interest are hematology and dermatology. She joined ANTECH in 2006, and resides in the Raleigh-metro area with her husband Patrick, and rescue miniature schnauzers Maia and Juliette. When she’s not behind the microscope, Valarie enjoys running, cycling and sporting clay shooting. She is an avid football and Steeler fan!

Reema Patel

Bio

Reema is a citizen of the world. She was born in NY, and has since lived and traveled everywhere. She attended the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine, graduating in 2000, and worked in general small animal practice for 1 year in Florida. Reema completed her clinical pathology residency training at the University of Pennsylvania, and was the recipient of the C.L. Davis Veterinary Pathology Scholarship Award in 2003. She remained at Penn as a staff pathologist following her board certification in 2004. Reema is a member of both the ASVCP and ACVP. She has published several book chapters, as well as case reviews on a variety of neoplasms in the dog and cat, and a novel immunohistochemical staining technique for fluid specimens. She has guest lectured at St. Matthews University in Grand Cayman, and worked as a locum clinical pathologist at Gribbles Veterinary Pathology and Diagnostic Lab in New Zealand. Reema’s love of clinical pathology is rivaled by her love of marine mammals, and she has interned and trained dolphins at Kewalo Basin Marine Mammal Laboratory, Navy Dolphins, Miami Seaquarium, and New England Aquarium. Reema joined the ANTECH team in 2012 and works from a Regional ANTECH Laboratory in Annapolis, MD. In addition to her diagnostic responsibilities, Reema also serves as Co-Chief Medical Officer of Clinical Pathology at ANTECH.

Penny K. Patten

Bio

Penny completed both her DVM studies (2003) and clinical pathology residency training at Oklahoma State University, successfully completing her board certification exam in 2006. Penny joined ANTECH in 2006, and is located in a full service diagnostic facility in Dallas, TX. Penny is a member of the AVMA, ACVP, and ASVCP where she participates in the outreach committee, assisting with the society’s Facebook page, intended as a forum for all veterinarians with an interest in clinical pathology. Professionally, she enjoys cytology and hematology encompassing a wide variety of species including exotic, wildlife, production, and zoo animals. Away from work, Penny enjoys camping, hiking, and exploring national parks with her husband. She also loves knitting, cooking, and playing guitar.

Alana Pavuk

Bio

Alana earned her DVM from North Carolina State University in 2009, and practiced small animal medicine in North Carolina for one year prior to pursuing a pathology residency at Colorado State University. She also received a Master’s degree from Colorado State University for her work investigating a potential genetic predisposition for high-grade mast cell tumors in Chinese Shar-Pei dogs. She became board certified in 2013, and started working for ANTECH in 2014, while continuing as a small animal practitioner. She is no longer in private practice, but still maintains the perspective of a practicing veterinarian through her diagnostic work. Alana is a member of the ACVP, as well as a contributing member of the Mast Cell Tumor Subgroup of the Veterinary Cancer Society’s OncologyPathology Working Group. Her interests include oncopathology, especially mast cell tumors, oral tumors, and digital tumors, and respiratory pathology. Alana currently resides in Hillsborough, NC, with her husband, daughter, and one cat, Sawyer. Outside of professional pursuits, Alana enjoys hiking, Pilates, and above all, trail running through the mountains.

Don Petersen

After earning his VMD at the University of Pennsylvania in 1999, Don worked in small animal and exotics private practice in southern California, and Oregon. In 2008, he began a clinical pathology residency at Kansas State University, and completed board certification in 2011. Don resides in Portland with his wife, two children, three cats (Tiki, Ronde, and Mama cat) and one dog (Belle). In his free time, he enjoys surfing, biking, and hiking. He also puts his years of practice experience to good use volunteering with the Feral Cat Coalition of Oregon.

Ida Piperisova

Ida completed her DVM studies in her home country of Czech Republic, graduating from the Veterinary and Pharmaceutical University Brno in 2004, and remaining there for postgraduate studies in anesthesiology. In 2006 Ida crossed the Atlantic, accepting a research assistantship in Immunohistochemistry at Kansas State University, before relocating to North Carolina State University in 2007 for residency training in Clinical Pathology. She has published on a variety of topics including innovations in veterinary student instruction and parasitic infections. She is a member of both the ASVCP and ACVP, where she has served on the Quality Assurance and Standards Committee. She is also a reviewer for both JAVMA and AJVR. She holds a masters certificate in health care leadership from Cornell University. Cytology, bone marrow evaluation, and quality control are areas of particularly interest to Ida. Upon completing her certification exam in 2010, Ida joined the ANTECH group in Lake Success, NY. She has embraced her new home in the Big Apple, and has become a committed NY Rangers fan. She resides with her very loud rescued domestic shorthair cat, Pidiha, and enjoys travel, cycling, hiking, snowshoeing, cooking, and good food and wine.
