and Protocols

Covid 19 01 Hero MB 2x

As communities begin reopening, Antech is now offering a commercial test for SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes Covid-19 in humans.

During quarantines and social distancing, Antech maintained a surveillance program for the virus, identifying two positive cases in cats. However, as communities reopen, it’s now appropriate to transition to making testing available in specific circumstances as recommended by leading veterinary and human health authorities.

In accordance with these guidelines, veterinary teams can access the test as follows:

Step 1:

Consult health authorities

The following agencies offer specific guidance for determining when testing is warranted and working with health authorities:

American Veterinary Medical Association
U.S. Dept. of Agriculture
World Organisation for Animal Health

We recommend following the AVMA decision guidance on determining if testing is appropriate.

Step 2:
Test ordering

Once a veterinary team has secured the proper approvals, the SARS-CoV-2 test can be ordered as an add-on to panels for routine GI and respiratory PCR testing either at the time of initial request or within 7 days of results of PCR testing have been completed.

Step 3:
Confirmatory testing

Presumptive positive results require confirmation by the USDA’s National Veterinary Services Laboratories (NVSL).

Covid 19 02 Feature Dskt

In early March, Antech began its pet surveillance program for SARS-CoV-2 with two objectives:

  1. Detect emergence of SARS-CoV-2 in pets;

  2. Contribute to emerging understanding of virus transmission in humans and animals.

In mid-April, Antech’s surveillance program identified two positive cases of the virus in cats. It immediately provided these suspected positive cases to the USDA and CDC. The agencies announced confirmation of these cases on April 22, 2020.

After testing thousands of pet samples, Antech has discovered no new positive cases. These findings align with the positions of leading animal and human health organizations, which agree that transmission of the virus from human to animal is very rare, and there is no evidence that pets play a role in spreading the virus in the United States.

Notably, there are no reports of pets being the primary source of infection or of animal-to-human transmission.

"This program is important as it contributes to the body of scientific evidence needed to understand the transmission of the SARS-CoV-2 virus for both humans and animals,”

said Jennifer Ogeer, BSc., DVM, MSc., MBA, MA, VP Medical Affairs & Commercial Marketing at Antech. “We started surveillance in early March and have two confirmed positive cases out of a current total of more than 2000 samples. So far, we have seen few confirmed reports of human-to-animal transmission in pets, and there are currently no reports of pets found to be the primary source of infection or of animal-to-human transmission.”
