Most domestic cats will have circulating Toxoplasma gondii DNA within 4 weeks of infection. Organisms may be released from tissue cysts resulting in intermittent positive tests for months to years in some cats. The presence of circulating organisms has not been found to correlate with clinical disease. Detection of organism in CSF or aqueous humor may be more significant than blood.

  Comments Preferred tissues are brain, spinal cord, heart, and kidney. Do not use this test code for primates.

  Specimen 1 royal blue top or plasma from green microtainer
  Method Atomic absorption
  Schedule 7–10 working days
  Indication Possible ingestion of zinc or signs of toxicity.
  Comments DO NOT USE TUBES WITH RUBBER STOPPERS.
Plasma or serum needs to be separated from cells and transferred to a plastic vial.
KEY  GT Green top microtainer tube (heparinized). Comes with or without separator gel.
 LT Lavender top micortainer tube (EDTA).
 HCT Heparinized hematocrit tube.
 SST Serum separator microtainer tube.
