Sample Requirement for Parathyroid Hormone (PTH) Testing We have previously requested that specimens for ionized calcium and PTH combination testing be sent in a spun and frozen SST. However, because frozen SST have been prone to breakage in transit, the following recommendation is made: Submit 2 samples for the ionized calcium/PTH combo test: Decant one tube of serum into a plastic tube and freeze; send to lab on frozen cold packs. Collect another tube of serum in SST, but do not freeze; send to lab on cold packs.
